Few topics are addressed more in Scripture than the poor and the way God’s people are to minister to them. Scripture tells us plainly that hunger is not going away. It will always be a part of our fallen world (Deut. 15:11).
Yet we are called to be actively involved in ministry to those in need. “‘The one who has two shirts must share with someone who has none, and the one who has food must do the same’” (Luke 3:11).
Why?
Ministry to the poor is a service to God. “’Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me’” (Matt. 25:40).
Ministry to the poor gives great joy. “Whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy” (Prov. 14:21).
All of our material resources belong to God. “The earth and everything in it . . . belong to the Lord” (Psalm 24:1).
The Lord should be our priority, not material things. “‘Be on guard against all greed because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions’” (Luke 12:15-21).
Ministry to those in need demonstrates the reality of being a follower of Jesus Christ. “If anyone has this world’s goods and sees his brother in need but shuts off his compassion from him—how can God’s love reside in him?” (1 John 3:17).
Caring for those in need is an opportunity and a privilege as well as an obligation. We must not view it in any other way.
